Aerospace OEMs and their value chains face immense challenges to stay on course to meet increased global travel demand and ambitious international emissions reduction targets.


The global commercial aviation industry, with a market value of nearly US $5 trillion1, is poised to accommodate unprecedented growth in the coming decades, thanks to soaring travel demand driven by increasing globalization, growing gross domestic product, liberalization of air transport, and decreasing travel prices2. Between today and 2031, the global passenger fleet is expected to double3 4.

Fuel efficiency

At the same time, the aerospace industry is committed in the next two decades to reaching ambitious targets for boosting fuel efficiency and reducing aircraft weight. Under the Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe (ACARE) Strategy Research Agenda, aircraft by 2020 are to burn 50 percent less fuel, emit 50 percent less carbon dioxide (CO2), and 80 percent less mononitrogen oxides (NOx), and the perceived noise level is to be reduced by half. Flightpath 2050 and International Air Transport Association (IATA) lay out even greater targets. As a result, the aerospace value chain faces a constrained capacity scenario as production is expected to increase 45 percent in the next two years. Given the sophisticated designs of new aircraft models, that increase could be upward of 70 percent by some accounts.

Essential to meeting these challenges is the industry’s ability to access and maintain consistently superb quality, integrity and accuracy in manufacturing processes in a time when aerospace components—and the demands they fulfill—are becoming increasingly complex.
