MTConnect is an open, royalty-free standard that is intended to foster greater interoperability between devices and software applications. By establishing an open and extensible channel of communication for plug-and-play interconnectivity between devices, equipment and systems, MTConnect allows sources to exchange and understand each other’s data. This common communication is facilitated by XML and HTTP technology to provide real-time data from throughout a factory. This common communication empowers software developers to implement applications aimed at providing more efficient operations, improved production optimization and increased productivity.
So how does MTConnect work?
On a basic level MTConnect works as a translator. For example let’s say you have three different machines running on your floor and they all speak a different language. When you connect them to MTConnect you can set up an interface where MTConnect collects the data from the three machines and shows you the information on all three machines in one language.
So how does this help you?
Live data from the machine will allow you to monitor the machine but this will only tell you what is happening now, like a picture take from a camera you can only see what happened at that moment. If you can store this data you can do a lot more. By drilling into this data, for example, you know exactly how long it took to do a part. Now do 100 of the same part, and on the 40th to current part the recorded data shows the part cutting time increased, Why? First of all if you didn’t have this data, you would never know this occurred unless the operator of the machine noticed the slight variation in time. Drilling in deeper you notice that just before the 40th part maintenance was done on the machine and the contacts in the machine were changed out. Then drilling deeper you see that the contact used from 1 to 40 was from GF Machining Solutions and the contact changed out from the 40th part to current was from a third party. This analysis shows that the contact from the third party is not as efficient then the contact from GF Machining Solutions. This is one example out of many that show the value of actual data from the machine can increase performance while decreasing cost and guess work.
