With approximately 500,000 inhabitants, Leipzig is one of the largest
cities in the new German states. It is culturally well known due to
Auerbach's Keller from Goethe’s Faust, the Mädler Passage,
and the Gewandhaus. The Gewandhaus Orchestra has enjoyed world acclaim
for decades. Leipzig is closely connected with the name of Johann
Sebastian Bach, who was the appointed cantor of the St. Thomas Church.
The economic significance of Leipzig is based on its favorable
location, as well as its centuries-old tradition as a site for fairs.
The retail shops, some of which are in the carefully restored
buildings of the old city, reflect the former significance of Leipzig
as a fair center and center of commerce. Today, the most important
trade shows held in Leipzig are the Book Fair and the AMI (AutoMobil International).
The AMI is an indication of an increasingly important economic
factor, the automotive industry and the automotive supply industry. In
recent years, modern plants for BMW and Porsche have started
production in Leipzig. Porsche, based in Stuttgart, manufactures the
Cayenne off-road vehicle here, and its Customer Centre provides a
complete on- and off-road experience that sets customers’ pulses racing.
GF Automotive in Leipzig operates a foundry that is home to
Europe’s largest moulding box for machine-moulded castings. This
enables economic production of large and heavy components.
Leipzig’s favorable location has set the tone not only for the
industry sectors already mentioned, but also for the establishment of DHL.
With the underground connection from the Main Railway Station
(the largest terminal railway station in Europe) to the Bavarian
Railway Station, rail traffic also takes on increasing significance
for the Saxon economic metropolis.
