Planet: Strengthen environmental stewardship

Efforts to reduce our environmental footprint include cutting emissions across our value chain, reducing our energy consumption, strengthening water stewardship in high-stress regions and ensuring responsible use of natural resources.

We work toward science-based Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions reduction targets while advancing responsible resource and waste management. By decarbonizing our operations, reducing water use and waste, strengthening recycling and sustainable packaging solutions, and engaging our supply chain, we create sustainable value for our stakeholders.

Climate and emissions

Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is central to GF's Sustainability Framework and our commitment to a more sustainable future. Guided by science-based targets, we are taking actions across our operations and value chain to reduce emissions and drive long-term progress.

Our approach focuses on improving energy efficiency, expanding the use of renewable energy and collaborating with suppliers and business partners to accelerate emissions reductions.

A science-based pathway to net zero by 2050

GF's near- and long-term GHG emissions reduction targets are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) under its Corporate Net-Zero Standard. These targets provide a science-based pathway to achieving net-zero GHG emissions across GF's value chain by 2050.

GF is committed to achieving net-zero GHG emissions across its value chain by 2050. Under its validated net-zero pathway, GF has set the following long-term emissions reduction targets, compared with the 2024 base year:

Scope 1 and 2: Reduce absolute GHG emissions by 90% by 2050.
Scope 3: Reduce GHG emissions per tonne of production output by 97% by 2050.

Reducing emissions in our own operations

GF reduces emissions across its operations by continuously improving energy efficiency and increasing the use of renewable energy. Investments in modern equipment, optimized processes and energy-efficient technologies help reduce energy consumption while enhancing operational performance. At the same time, GF is accelerating the transition from fossil fuels to renewable electricity and other low-carbon energy solutions.

GF has already made significant progress in reducing emissions from its own operations. Since the adjusted baseline year 2019, the company has reduced its combined Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 51%.

Addressing emissions across the value chain

The majority of GF's GHG impact occurs across its value chain (Scope 3), making collaboration with suppliers, customers and business partners essential to achieving long-term emissions reductions.

GF works closely with suppliers to improve emissions transparency and identify opportunities to reduce environmental impact. Key priorities include increasing the use of low-carbon and bio-based materials, promoting responsible sourcing, optimizing logistics and enhanced product transparency through Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).

Water stewardship

We are committed to reducing water intensity, especially in regions facing high water stress, through responsible water management. Our initiatives include rainwater harvesting, water reuse systems and employee engagement programs that raise awareness and encourage conservation across our operations.

Waste and recycling

We strive to minimize waste through optimized processes and considerate use of materials. By improving recycling efforts as well as waste segregation and advancing circular solutions, we help reduce our environmental footprint while keeping valuable resources in circulation.

Distribution and packaging

We cut emissions and limit waste by streamlining logistics and choosing materials responsibly. Efforts include more efficient transport planning, optimized loading and reduced packaging volumes. Expanding the use of recyclable and reusable packaging further strengthens circularity across our value chain.

Biodiversity

Biodiversity is embedded in our Sustainability Framework 2030 and informs our approach to responsible resource use. By supporting the GF Water Foundation with financial and in-kind donations (u. e. employees time), we work with selected partners to develop and implement impactful projects that contribute to the protection and restoration of ecosystems.
