Georg Fischer presents technologies for the markets of the future

2010/9/22 - 13:30 (中欧时间)

The sparing use of the resource water and the reduction of CO2  emissions are among the most urgent issues of our times. Georg Fischer (GF) offers future-oriented solutions in these key areas. In the past two years, the markets of GF have shifted towards the high-growth economies, especially in Asia. As Yves Serra, CEO of Georg Fischer, explained: "These changed conditions demand local production as well as decentralised research in the new markets. We are increasingly developing our products in those markets where our customers are located."

GF Piping Systems continuously develops innovative solutions to save water. The Corporate Group is today one of the leading manufacturers of leak-proof plastic piping systems. GF Piping Systems has launched new valves which increase the flow rate and save energy, as well as new sensors that monitor water quality.

The Corporate Group's engineers are also developing applications that help to sequestrate CO2  emissions from industry or power plants. Equipments featuring specially engineered piping systems make it possible for algae to grow fast. Algae, which will be used to produce bio-diesel, bind CO2, a possible answer to one of the world's most pressing environmental issues.

GF Automotive is deeply involved in developing lighter cast parts thanks to its close relationship with its customers. The new bionic designs imitate natural structures. Even when thickness is reduced, they lose none of their stability. This approach requires less material, and the parts are up to 25 percent lighter. Cast components based on this technology are already installed in the cars of European manufacturers.

Another area of research is components for hybrid and electric cars, the first of which are already on the road.

The market of GF AgieCharmilles has undergone a clear shift to Asia. Thanks to a close cooperation with its customers, the Corporate Group now offers dedicated electroerosion and high speed milling machines to manufacture highly precise moulds for the production of light-emitting diodes. LEDs are a highly energy-efficient technology that is set to replace traditional lighting.

GF AgieCharmilles also developed a world-premiere 3D laser texturing machine that complements well its technology portfolio. This new technology allows customers to substitute the polluting etching technique today in use for marking, engraving or for texturing of metal surfaces.

Georg Fischer employs about 550 engineers and technicians in its research and development (R&D) departments the world over. In 2009 the Corporation invested more than 116 million francs (four percent of sales) in research and development. "Local product development is essential to tackle local customer needs but a sound team work around the globe is also required" says Yves Serra. "This makes know-how transfer possible right across the Corporation's Corporate Groups and generates the customer focus that is the key to Georg Fischer's technology leadership." Switzerland plays a crucial role in its international R&D network and offers an ideal business environment with highly trained specialists at all levels. This is where the core competencies of Georg Fischer lie.

At the end of his presentation, CEO Yves Serra summed up: "Georg Fischer is well positioned to benefit from the key trends of its markets. We are working closely together with our customers and are continuously developing our key technologies in order to respond to their needs.”
