GF renews historical drinking water towers in Belgium

The city of Ghent in Belgium has undertaken the task of renovating its iconic drinking water towers, a significant milestone in water infrastructure.

Through innovative engineering and strategic collaboration, GF Piping Systems Belux has played a central role in this initiative – from ideation to delivery.

The Kattenberg Drinking Water Towers Renewal Project aiming to revitalize two late 19th-century water towers, highlights the role that modern technology can play in preserving historical landmarks, while meeting contemporary needs and challenges.

The towers, which provide drinking water to the city, had several leaks in the past and pipes needed to be renewed, according to Drinking Water Company FARYS, which led the project.

GF Piping Systems’ wide range of high-quality materials and equipment – including high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes, ELGEF Plus fittings, and advanced welding tools – was crucial to overcome the challenges posed by limited space around the ancient towers while ensuring seamless installation and long-term durability. Furthermore, GF’s specialized ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT) was employed on HDPE to ensure the integrity and safety of the piping system for decades to come.

The project was completed in December 2023: a good example of successfully blending modern technology and historical know-how for the sustainable future of generations to come.
